Join Mike, Zoe, and the generous Howard Sandifer, co-founder of Chicago West Music Community Center with his wife, Darlene. Coming from a background in music education, the duo took action in response to the lack of instruction, play, and artistic structure in institutions on the West side. Their journey as a non-profit begun in 1999, and for almost 30 years they have formed coalitions of young musicians, instrumentalists, and singers who otherwise may have lacked a basic foundation in their art forms due to our city’s well segregated neighborhood income and wealth gaps.

From Miles Davis to Kendrick Lamar, Howard astutely recognizes the thread of bold experimentation, deeply embedded passion, and dedication to musical knowledge that has carried the genres of music from America’s Harlem renaissance to overseas opera, Hip Hop, R&, B, world music, and beyond.

Howard Sandifer – Co-founder and Executive Director of Chicago West Community Music Center (CWCMC)

A seasoned composer, arranger, producer, recording artist, and music educator, Howard is the co-founder and executive director of CWCMC. He is responsible for the leadership, development, delivery, and maintenance of CWCMC’s programs, funding base, and development of a step-by-step learning process to help students learn and grow. Howard has received numerous awards for outstanding teaching, leadership, and work with youth and is the Co-Chair of the African American Education Committee of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
