This episode, join Mike, Zoe, and Janel Moreland’s talk about the mission and activities of Pink Divas and Gents, a nonprofit organization focused on raising awareness about breast cancer and supporting survivors. From the annual breast cancer walk to the intersection of faith-based healing, our guest steadfastly pioneers the education of women and men about breast health in our West Side Communities.

While most of us may feel our blood run cold just at the mere thought of cancer, it’s a lived reality for thousands; that goes especially for Black women who are at risk 1 out of 8 women to be diagnosed due to socioeconomic and lifestyle influences (see Breast Cancer Research Foundation). In this country, it is important to advocate all we can for ourselves in the doctor’s office and in our neighborhoods, which is why Janel is so dedicated to making sure everyone feels supported on their journeys.

Since beginning with her own research inspired by the passing of her paternal grandmother from breast cancer, Janel heard a calling from God and her fellow neighbors to turn her action into a movement. From 2018 to the present, PD&G has served women and men alike with early detection, treatment, informational sessions, resources, and more. Community is vital for wellness, and there is no better time in human history to take advantage of our modern technologies to uplift, protect, and heal with one another.

Pink Divas and Gents are very excited for June 27th, which is when the Walk/Run for Hope will take place at Morton High School. Feel free to also enjoy festivities such as line-dancing while receiving pertinent information on health from the vendors.

About Guest

Janel Moreland – Founder and E.D of Pink Divas and Gents

Janel Moreland was born and raised in Chicago and the western suburbs. She has been married to her husband, Darryl Pruitt for 18 years. She is a mother of 2 daughters, Jazmin age 28 (recent US Navy Veteran), Jocelyn age 20 (pre-dental student at UIC) and 2 bonus babies. She is also a grandmother to 1 special grandson and 2 bonus granddaughters. Janel graduated from St. Paul Lutheran Grade School and Walther Lutheran High School. She received her Associates Degree in General Education from Triton College and her Bachelor’s Degree in Managerial Communications from Elmhurst College.

Janel is the Founder and President of Pink Divas & Gents Breast Cancer Organization, which was established in 2019 as a 501c3 not for profit. She was inspired to create the organization due to the lack of education, resources, benefits, a high mortality rate and inequality for black and brown women. Her interest in breast cancer was ignited by the loss of her paternal grandmother and her own experience with breast issues. Having lost a loved one and witnessing individuals battle breast cancer, Janel has made it her goal and part of the organization’s mission, to support, raise awareness, provide resources, encourage, empower and educate both women and men in the western suburbs and the surrounding Chicagoland Area about breast cancer. She is also an ambassador for the American Cancer Society Study “Voices” of Black Women.

Janel believes that with God as the foundation and in the center of Pink Divas & Gents that the organization will impact lives locally and nationally.

If we can help just one somebody then our living and work was not in vain.
