Greater Chicago Food Depository Adds Saturday Distributions as SNAP Pause Deepens Strain
Several West Side hubs — including the Aspire Center, Grace and Peace, and Harmony Community Cares — to offer 20-lb. grocery boxes throughout November

With thousands of Chicagoans facing a sudden gap in food assistance due to the ongoing federal government shutdown and the pause in SNAP/Link benefits, the Greater Chicago Food Depository is expanding its emergency food operations with additional Saturday distributions at select sites across the city.
The pop-up hubs — many of them on the West Side — will operate on staggered schedules throughout November and will distribute pre-packaged boxes containing more than 20 pounds of groceries. Supplies will be available on a first-come, first-served basis until they run out.
Residents are encouraged to bring their Link2Feed card, though it is not required to receive food.
West Side Sites Activating This Saturday, Nov. 8
Some of the new Saturday distributions will take place on Nov. 8 at multiple West Side locations:
- Aspire Center, 5500 W. Madison St., Austin | Saturday, Nov. 8 | 10 a.m.
- Grace and Peace Church, 1856 N. LeClaire Ave., Austin | Saturday, Nov. 8 | 10 a.m.
- Harmony Community Cares, 1908 S. Millard Ave., North Lawndale | Saturday, Nov. 8 | 10 a.m.

These sites join a wider network of emergency hubs coordinated by the Food Depository and community partners as demand for food assistance climbs across the region.
The Food Depository said the additional hubs aim to blunt the immediate impact of the SNAP pause, which has cut off a critical lifeline for many families. Community organizers across the West Side report longer food pantry lines, increased requests for household staples, and mounting anxiety as residents brace for a potentially prolonged shutdown.
More Saturday sites and dates may be added in the coming days. Residents can check the full list of updated locations here.
