Martin Luther King Jr. Day is more than a holiday — it is a call to service, reflection, creativity, and collective action. Across Chicago’s West Side and west suburbs this year, that call is being answered with breakfasts, service projects, bike rides, cultural events, youth programs, galas, and neighborhood gatherings. Whether you are looking to volunteer, learn, celebrate, or simply be in community, here are some of the most meaningful ways to honor Dr. King’s legacy in 2026.

West Suburban Events

37th Annual Dr. MLK Jr. Celebration & Awards Gala – Operation Uplift | Saturday, January 17, 5 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. | Marriott Chicago–Oak Brook, 1401 W. 22nd St., Oak Brook | A black-tie celebration of Black excellence and 58 years of service to the Proviso Township community.
